Technically, hurricanes derive their energy from the release of latent heat which occurs as water vapor condenses. The more water vapor that condenses, the more latent heat is released. This is why they have to reside over very warm tropical waters, because that is where there is sufficient stored heat energy available for the growing tropical cyclone to utilize in order to reach hurricane strength.

Hurricanes use energetic (warm) moist air to strengthen. This is the reason hurricanes begin to weaken as they come on shore. They are no longer receiving their supply of energy which they get over the ocean.
