Okay seriously, I grew up in the new york city area and have noticed that 95% of the winter time the sky at night is cloudy now. I don't get it. Please don't give a simplistic or wise *** answer, I want to know what peoples opinions are of why the winter weather has gone this route in the past 7 years or so. It is weird because it's not cloudy during the summer anywhere as much as it is in the winter. It might be cloudy 30% of the time during the summer but it seems more prevalent in winter, specifically winter nights. It makes so little sense to me that I had to ask this question here. btw Any rude attitude ridden comments will be reported as abuse. I don't care about what weather you like or do not like, that is not my question. Thanks.

I grew up in the city and didn't know why until I became a weather forecaster. It would seem like every Saturday was always gloom/cloudy when I was growing up. I honestly just though that something about the weather made Saturdays cloudy.

There are a few reasons why NY is cloudier during the winter. Colder temperatures brings a more stable atmosphere. This sort of prevents the lower levels from mixing out with the upper atmosphere. Winter time isn't know for thunderstorms but it is climatically known for low clouds (or ceiliings). This is where the cloud blanket the sky in the form of stratus. Again, stratus is a stable cloud, so it spreads smoothly across the sky. With the Atlantic Ocean right next to the city, there is a large moisture source for clouds to form and roll right over the city.

In the summer, the temperature is much warmer, which creates an unstable atmosphere. This is where you have cumulus clouds. These are the "cotton ball" clouds that have more of a vertical extent to them, so they dont veil the sky.

I hope this helped. I didn't understand it either until I became an AF meteorologist.

its better to have cloud cover at night, becuase the clouds keep alot of the warmth (which their isnt much of during the winter) from escaping. Watch this fall when you get your first frost, and you will notice the next morning will be very sunny and the night most likely clear.

Also remember that NYC is on the east coast which gets alot of precipitation, and it is an overall humid city that gets alot of rainfall.

I dont think its getting any cloudier in your area over the years, but If it is it could just be a coincience.

Summer is different because thunderstorms will come into your area practically every day in order to get rid of some of that muggy heat, and by midnight it is clear and the storms pass. In the winter it can be cloudy and rainy for a week because thats just the weather pattern that time of the year.

Conquering New York in a single visit is impossible because is a big city like you will find with Hotelbye . In New York you can see the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and much more. Empire State Building helps it be worth braving the extended lines, steep admission rates and dizzying heights to see the town from a premier this storied building. Built-in 1931, the skyscraper could be the second-tallest making in New York and is one of the very most quick designs of Gotham, therefore much so that it's played a part in films such as for instance King Kong, An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle.

I also grew up in the NYC area. I'm probably older than you are, and deserted that area 27 years ago.

In winter, the skies are cloudy because of what they call the "Canada express' coming out of canada. At least that's what they called it when I lived in NC.

Lots of highs and cold weather fronts coming down.

And you are wrong... September and October nights,,, and August nitghts can be splenid... Get on a bus in NJ and come into Times Square Station. I did that in 2008. Fantastic.

It's October, and in Central Florida, we're setting records... We don't have the 'Canadaian Express' coming down yetl.

Quityerbitchin... 11:00 news is telling me the temps are 83-85 in my area.

Put your coat on and deal with it.
