When it comes to artificial snow, ice, or frost, there are more than 100 different materials that can be used, according to Snow Business, a U.K.-based company that supplies ersatz snow for movie sets. Different classes of materials include paper, plastic, starch and cellulose, or foam.

On movie sets, several products generally will be used in combination or with machine-made snow to create the desired effect. Machine snow is usually avoided because it melts and doesn't look flaky when it's falling. Paper, starch, and cellulose are good materials for falling snow. They can be sprinkled down onto a scene and kept aloft by fans blowing air from the edges of the set. A problem with fans, however, is that the noise may interfere with dialog. During snow scenes there often will be no dialog, only music, or the dialog will be dubbed over.

Artificial Snow

Biodegradable Snow: Looks exactly like Real Snow!

Works Great Indoors or Outdoors!

Looks and falls just like real snow, but it's not cold and doesn't leave a mess! Our artificial snow is plant and animal friendly and dissolves completely in water - just hose it down or let the rain take care of the cleanup, or sweep it up and re-use it! Thick enough to form large snow banks, yet airy enough to float gracefully with air movement. Preferred over real snow on the sets of many Hollywood Movies. Environmentally Friendly! Soft texture, floats easily - just like the real thing! Great for window displays, theatre, photo shoots and Christmas-time fun!

Six pounds is enough to cover a 20' by 20' area with a light snow. For best results, fluff the snow after opening, then shake the bag that it comes in to loosen up snow particles. The Snow Blower (below) is not required to use this product, but is helpful for covering large areas. Artificial snow will become sticky when wet. For a winter time tree, lightly water tree beforehand, then cover with artificial snow.

Make snow instantly with this amazing Polymer. Add one tablespoon to up to 32 ounces of water and stir! The more you stir, the more it shines and sparkles! Super Snow expands to over 100x its size and last for weeks without rewetting. It has been used on movie sets and in snowboarding parks. In addition, the snow can be reused. This artificial Snow looks and feels like the real thing, except it can be used indoors. If you want to make it cold, simply place it in the refrigerator or freexer after mixing. Make snowballs, snowflakes and snowmen in the summertime! A 1 lb. bag can cover up to a 5 ft. square area. Reuse it again and again! Great for kids age 6 and up. Non-toxic, recommended by kids magazines as a great way to teach children in warmer climates about snow!
