Question:
Tornado Warnings and sirens?

It seams many people including myself don't take the tornado sirens and warning as serious anymore. It use to be a watch first and the if a tornado was actually spotted a warning, then we took cover. The warning nowadays is more like crying wolf all the time because 19 out of 19 times warnings don't produce a tornado, some rotation but no tornado or damage. If it as all possible lets have 3 levels watch means conditions are favorable so prepare, a new distinctive warning meaning rotation if you want, and then the tornado siren meaning a tornado for sure, take cover. Its not just me ask people yourself. My question is what idiot did not think this through before changing the system? I know what someone will answer... just look at the people out in tornado ally good thing they have warnings.... to be clear I believe in the warnings we need them. I'm just saying in the past when a warning was given the tornado was real, today when a warning is given a slight chance of a tornado is what happens. We need to have an upgrade to the system how do we change this?

You can't ! Simple as that. What you have now is a placebo. You said it ! that siren is calling wolf and people won't heed it after a couple false warnings. SPILL is just a word until it happens. Like the sirens in London during WW2 ! It only meant take cover IF you want to. No guarantee of where the bomb will land. You must understand a tornado only lasts a few minutes. And it's formation and touch down is totally random. Most don't hit a populated area.

IF you ignore tornado watches and warnings, it is at your grave peril! It's like you're out in a pasture and you see a bull on the other side. That's a WATCH - you WATCH the bull to see if he heads in your direction. If he does head at you, that's a WARNING for you to get somewhere that the bull cannot get you!. The same is true of severe weather watches and warnings.

If conditions are favorable for tornadoes forming, a tornado WATCH will be issued. BE prepared for possible tornadoes.

If a wall cloud with rotation is observed by weather spotters, it is carefully observed, and if a funnel appears it is reported and a tornado WARNING will be issued - however technically it is NOT a tornado until it reaches the ground. Sometimes a funnel will not appear to reach the ground, but the critical thing is if there is a debris field. When a debris field appears it becomes a tornado. Just because YOU didn't see or experience a tornado during a tornado warning does not mean there isn't one, one HAS been observed - it may be several miles from you. It may also be indicated on radar but not observed by spotters on the ground. So, unless you are a trained severe weather spotter, if a tornado WARNING is issued, the only safe thing to do is get to a safe place.

What idiot did not think this through? Hmm. Well, a tornado can form in a matter of 3 seconds, so the sirens have to be sounded when the conditions are ripe for a tornado to form. If you're not near your TV or Radio and can't get detailed information about a storm, the sirens would let you know that it's time to get to a safe place.

It's a situation where a lot of people have lost their lives this spring, and towns that didn't have sirens experienced greater loss.

It sounds like what you're asking for is a specific signal that will alert you to the perfect time to go stand on your porch and take pictures of an awesome storm. That's not ever gonna happen. Being prepared for a tornado is your own responsibility. The siren means turn on the TV or radio to hear about the exact path of the storm. Take cover if necessary. Seems pretty much like common sense to me.

Tornado Warning Definition

Tornado warnings are issued if a rotating wall cloud, funnel cloud or tornado is sighted by trained spotters or is radar indicated.

A lot of places are starting to sound their outdoor warning sirens(they are not tornado sirens) for severe weather criteria(large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes). All these can be property and life threatening.

The problem with having many different types of warnings is that a rotation in the clouds may form a tornado within minute. So, by the time a "rotation warning" is issued a tornado could already be occurring.

Most of the time, when sirens are being tested, it is done during the day. Check you local news stations or radio stations for weather info.
